Description
One of the most beloved residential communities in NYC has to be Battery Park City, which also has the distinction of being one of the youngest neighborhoods in Manhattan. From its conception in 1962, battery park city was destined to revitalize NYC's shipping terminals with a combination of industry, offices and housing. A decade after the initial concept, the Battery Park City Authority had issued in excess of $200 million in moral obligation bonds to develop the landfill, which would become the very spot where development of the Battery Park community centers would begin in 1972.

In battery park city, there are no tenements, walk-ups, or brownstones; all of the residential dwellings are ultra-modern luxury high rises that fall into either the rental or condominium category.

The vast majority of the residents in this neighborhood are Wall Street businesspeople and their families due to the immediate proximity of the Financial District and the convenience that living so close to their work affords. Local and surrounding area infrastructure reflects the general lifestyle of the residents and includes any number of health clubs and gyms, athletic clubs (including tennis, golf, racquetball, etc...), restaurants and cafes, and retail establishments. Residents also enjoy various biking, jogging, and rollerblading paths and areas adjacent to the West Hudson.

The major turn-off of living in the battery park city neighborhood would have to be the exorbitant numbers of tourists that are drawn here to visit the Statue of Liberty, Governor's Island, and Ellis Island. Conversely, as a result of its relatively remote location, Battery Park City can really be called neighborhood on its own. Aside from small conveniences and mainly office buildings, there aren't many things that are within walking distance but this is actually a plus as it means that the area tends to be quiet and empty on the weekends. Living in this neighborhood is about as close to 'suburban' as one can get within the confines of NYC.
